Successfully designing a Zero Energy Home today is a daunting task first and foremost because it challenges accepted notions of what is even possible. The design of the Cottle Home commenced in early 2008, and in 2011 we still lack a common vocabulary and understanding of the building science, technologies, design principles, systems and construction best practices which make it possible to conceive, design and construct Zero Energy Homes.

This situation is changing rapidly! We hope this web site will contribute toward the rapid development of the knowledge and vocabulary of ZEH design.

Over time we will present the design of the Cottle Home project chronicled on this web site including everything from high level concepts to critical construction details.
